Plant and Oil Description

Cloves are the aromatic flower buds that come from a 40 ft tall evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, also known as the Spice Islands. The trees boom with clusters of fragrant crimson flowers used to derive both the spice and the essential oil. Cloves have a multifaceted historical reputation in aromatherapy and traditional medicine, with evidence for their use dating as far back as 1720 BCE in Syria. Their pungent, warm and woody scent made them a staple breath freshener for emperors of the Han Dynasty in China and they are a traditional ingredient in holiday spice recipes.

What’s it Good For?

  1. Holiday fragrances – Our clove oil is an essential ingredient for capturing the aroma of the holiday season and can be used to make a great, personalized gift! Combine with SenseLAB’s vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg oils for a basic holiday blend, then add in complementary fragrances to customize your scent—such as anise, neroli, sweet orange, or cedarwood. Use these aromas to craft your own personalized room spritzer, diffuser oil, potpourri enhancer, hand soap, or skincare products.
  2. Oral anesthetic – Historically capitalized on by the dental industry, clove oil is a traditional method for suppressing toothache pain. The active ingredient eugenol acts as a natural topical anesthetic and also has anti-inflammatory properties. To use our clove oil to relieve toothache pain, dilute with water and use as an oral rinse, or dilute with a carrier oil and apply a saturated swab or cotton ball to the affected tooth for 5 to 10 minutes. For extra support, use with SenseLAB’s peppermint oil, which contains menthol that can also help to reduce pain.
  3. Toenail fungus – Dilute with a carrier oil and apply our clove oil to the affected area, allowing to oil to be absorbed into the skin for at least 10 minutes; may also be used in a foot bath. Repeat daily until a healthy nail has fully grown in and replaced the infected nail. Can combine with tea tree, manuka, or cinnamon oils for additional antifungal benefits.
  4. Coughing and asthma – Clove oil’s antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties may help to ease respiratory conditions such as asthma and coughing associated with the common cold and pneumonia. Add our clove oil to a diffuser, vaporizer, or hot bath. May also be diluted with a carrier oil and rubbed onto the chest for relief.
